Treatment depends on the type of disease and how far it's progressed.

The first step usually involves cleaning the teeth above an below the gum line. The tooth roots may also be planed to smooth the root surface. Sometimes, the occlusion (bite) may require adjustment.

Sometimes your dentist may recommend the use of an antibiotic mouth wash or even place antibiotic fibers in the periodontal pockets to help normal healing. 

With more severe disease, surgery may be needed to restore periodontal health.
