Flossing daily helps remove plaque and food particles between teeth and below the gum line. Here are some useful tips on flossing:

  1. Wrap about 18-inch strand around your middle fingers and hold a 1-inch section tightly.

  2. Ease floss between teeth. Use up and down motion several times as you curve the floss around the teeth at the gum line.

  3. Remember to always floss behind the last tooth.

  4. Floss around the abutment teeth of a bridge and under artificial teeth using a floss threader.

You may feel sore or bleeding gums for a few days after you start flossing. If bleeding continues after 1 week of flossing, consult your dentist. Some people have a hard time holding the dental floss. There are several types of floss holders that are available. Ask you dentist what may work the best for you.
